Riyadh's combination of medieval and millennial cultures creates a seductive cultural union - one in which Arabia's earliest origins can be traced and its daring future can be imagined. The city's intriguing, centuries-old history can be found in its evocative souqs, captivating museums, and historic architecture, but it's also a modern metropolis, with gleaming high-rises and a thriving contemporary art scene. The winter months are perfect for visiting Riyadh. Although average summer high temperatures can reach 44 degrees Celsius, the highest temperatures in December and January are in the low 20s.

Al Masmak Fortress, a vast clay and mud-brick citadel built in 1865 and superbly preserved, is a favorite among tourists looking to step back in time and explore Saudi Arabia's roots. After living in Kuwait, King Abdulaziz seized the stronghold and took possession of Riyadh (his ancestral home) in 1902. Abdulaziz Al Saud conquered and unified the several kingdoms and regions that make up the Saudi country as we know it today from this castle. Another must-see attraction is the Saudi National Museum, which has over 3,700 artefacts illustrating Saudi Arabia's vast history over millennia.
